If you’re looking to use edible THC therapeutically, or to treat a certain condition, but don’t have access to dispensaries or legal medical cannabis providers, homemade THC capsules may be a good option for you. Cannabis-infused capsules are a perfect DIY project for anybody looking for a safe, inexpensive, and relatively simple at-home infusion. They are discreet, quick to take, and make it easy to control dose.
What makes THC pills even better is that that are really simple to make at home, so here is our quick guide to doing it.
Just about any flower, kief, or extract can be used when you are learning how to make weed pills. The trim left over from harvesting and manicuring buds is also commonly used. What you choose might depend on what you have available or what fits your budget. The more potent the material you use, the more potent your canna oil will be.
The easiest and most accurate way to test the strength of your caps is to take them to a lab for testing. If you’re looking for a rough estimate of how strong your caps are, take the potency of your starting material and convert it to milligrams.
If you know how much THC is in your concentrate or bud you can figure out how much to use so that each pill has the desired levels of THC.
Each pill can be filled with 0.5ml (500mg) of cannabis oil.
- You want to make a 5mg THC pills
- Your cannabis strain is 10% THC
- Equation: 5mg THC pill / cannabis strain 10% THC = 5mg / 0.1 = 50mg
- This means you will need 50mg of cannabis for each pill to contain 5mg THC.
How many pills do you want to make?
You want to make 20 pills
- You need 50mg of cannabis for each pill to contain 5mg THC (from above)
- Equation: 20 pills x 50mg of cannabis each pill = 20 x 50mg = 1000mg
- This means you will need 1000mg of cannabis to make 20 pills each containing 5mg of THC
You can use this formula in the same way when using concentrates such as hash oil, shatter, wax etc, as long as you know how much THC is in them.
You will need:
- Cannabis (flower or concentrate – you can use pretty much any flower or extract. The more potent the material you use, the more potent your cannabis oil will be.
- Vegetable oil – any oil will work, but medium chain triglyceride (MCT) coconut oil is the best option.
- Digital scales
- Measuring cup
- Measuring spoon
- Stove or slow-cooker
- Empty gelatin or vegetarian capsules
- Syringe/dipper to fill the capsules
Step 1: Decarboxylation
Preheat your oven to 220 degrees Fahrenheit and prepare your material by grinding it finely with your grinder and spreading the grounds across a sheet of parchment paper that has been placed over a baking tray. Ovens tend to fluctuate in temperature, so it’s important to note that you do not want the oven hotter than 250 degrees. Any hotter and you begin to risk cooking off valuable cannabinoids. The material will need to bake for about 20-45 minutes before you can achieve a proper decarboxylation, though you can continue this process for longer if you prefer. Once finished, pull the tray from the oven and proceed to step 2.
If you plan on using your oven for the remainder of the process, keep the temperature at 220 degrees.
Step 2: Making Your Cannabis Oil
The next step is to make the cannabis oil that you will use to fill your capsules. You will be extracting the THC and other cannabinoids from your cannabis product, as well as any terpenes and flavonoids that might be present.
Using the example above, if you are making 20 pills and each capsule holds 0.5ml of oil – you will want to prepare (20 x 0.5ml)=10ml of vegetable oil to infuse your cannabis in.
Combine your kief or concentrate and vegetable oil and heat slowly on either a stove on the lowest temperature possible or ideally in a crock-pot (slow cooker) for around 4-5 hours to fully infuse the cannabis in the oil.
For concentrates it takes much less time, you just need to wait until the concentrate completely dissolves in the oil.
Allow your infused cannabis oil to cool at room temperature.
Step 3: Fill Your Capsules
Once you have made the canna oil of your choice, the next step in how to make THC capsules is filling your capsules. Separate the two pieces, setting the caps aside. Place the other half of the capsules in the filling tray, if you have one.
Using a syringe or large dropper, fill each of the capsules with the canna oil. If you’re using coconut oil, putting the tray in the freezer for a few minutes will solidify your oil and make it easier to put the tops on the capsules. Adding this step to how to make THC capsules will help prevent spilling the canna oil.
Next, carefully recap the capsules. Store them in the refrigerator or freezer to keep them fresh.
Step 4: Storage of THC Pills
Place your finished caps into a container, and put it into your fridge until you want to use them. The oil inside may solidify, but don’t worry about this, they are still perfectly fine to consume this way – your stomach will still digest them.
There are many benefits to THC pills. For one, they’re extremely discrete. They’re small and easily transported. And when you want to get high, all you need to do is pop a capsule in your mouth and wash it down with a mouthful of water. Capsules also function like edibles without all the extra calories. Best of all, they’re easy to make. What’s not to like?
