How Long Does Male Cannabis Pollen Live?

What is a good way to store pollen and how long can I keep it? Pollen from cannabis tends to be rather shortlived unless special precautions are taken to ensure it never comes into contact with moisture.

Just like cannabis seeds, you can store male cannabis pollen so that it would stay viable for a long period of time. While seeds can still be viable after ten years, provided growing conditions are met, male pollen may only be viable when stored for a few months. Male cannabis pollen loses its viability over time and therefore its best to always use fresh pollen in making cannabis seeds.

However, if you really need to preserve pollen for future grows or you are faced with a very long and cold climate ahead, there could be no other choice but to save your pollen for later. There are a few ways to store male cannabis pollen so these would stay viable for a long time.

Moisture is the number one enemy of cannabis pollen and seeds. Moisture can accumulate in seeds and can start mold growth. Mold infestation can affect the entire plant and can leave it useless. Molds are relentless but may be prevented with the use of a food-grade desiccant or some bits of raw rice. Rice will naturally suck up moisture and prevent mold growth and infestation.

While cannabis seeds may be refrigerated or frozen to preserve it for future uses, many growers advice not to freeze or refrigerate pollen because this can affect the viability of pollen. They also recommend that pollen should be used right away as well. But if you must store pollen, place it in a resalable container or plastic and store it in a cupboard or dark cabinet. And similar to storing seeds, pollen must be completely kept from sunlight and moisture. Place a label on your container with information about the date the pollen was stored and from what type of strain it is from.

When you need pollen to pollinate females, take just the amount you need from your pollen stash. Do not expose the rest of your seeds and pollen from sunlight and air. As long as your male pollen is kept cool, dry and completely airtight, it should last for at least a couple of months.
