According to a 2019 study from Kaiser Permanente, CBD oil can offer relief for both anxiety and insomnia. The study examined patients suffering from anxiety or poor sleep. For almost 80 percent, there was a decrease in anxiety, and 67 percent improved sleep within the first month.

Additionally, CBD oil could offer relief for chronic pain. A National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine research review suggests cannabinoids, including CBD, can treat chronic pain. The same review indicates cannabis can offer improved sleep outcomes for patients with sleep disorders, including sleep apnea.

In general, CBD oil is a low risk drug that could offer support for sleep by alleviating the symptoms of insomnia, anxiety, and chronic pain. According to the World Health Organization, CBD has a good safety profile and has a low risk of addiction or adverse effects.

Overall, CBD oil can help you feel calmer and more relaxed, which makes it easier to sleep. It can cut back on symptoms of anxiety, pain, and stress so sleep can come easier.

  • Don’t use CBD to replace healthy sleep habits. Yes, CBD could improve your sleep. But at the same time, it won’t fix bad sleep habits. If you’re staying up late with too much screen time, drinking coffee late into the day, or sleeping on an erratic schedule, CBD isn’t going to magically make all of your sleep issues go away. But it can make the transition to sleep easier, if you’re practicing healthy sleep habits. That means in addition to using CBD, you should make sure you’re sticking to a consistent sleep schedule with a regular bedtime routine.
  • Talk to your doctor about sleep disorders. Similarly, you can’t expect CBD alone to cure serious sleep conditions. If you’re suffering from insomnia, sleep apnea, or other serious sleep disorders, talk to your doctor about treatment and discuss how CBD can be a part of alleviating symptoms.
  • Schedule time to sleep time. Sleep quantity is just as important as sleep quality. You can’t expect to get a healthy night of sleep if you’ve only budgeted six hours of rest that night. Generally, adults should shoot for seven to nine hours of sleep every night.
  • Consider delivery method and timing. CBD can be used in a variety of ways, whether you’re using edibles, tinctures, smoking, or vaping. Generally, inhalation methods such as smoking or vaping will offer the fastest relief, though it may be short lived. Edibles, tinctures, and other ingestion methods may take some time to kick in, but could offer more sustained relief. Think ahead and consider whether fast relief is more important (such as falling asleep quickly), or sustained relief (such as sleeping through the night.
  • Check third party analysis. CBD product testing isn’t required everywhere, but you should make it a requirement before you purchase. Make sure your CBD supplier uses a third party to analyze purity, levels of CBD and THC, and any contaminants present. They should have a certificate of analysis available.
